Swiss investors foresee further investments: Consul General
KARACHI, July 31 (APP)- The Swiss investors in Pakistan are satisfied with their current business result and foresee further investments to consolidate their market position. This was stated by the Consul General of Switzerland in Karachi, Martin Bienz, here on Friday on the eve of the Swiss National Day to be marked on August 1. In his message on the occasion, he pointed out that the Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291 when three rural cantons formed a historic alliance to protect their freedom. Switzerland's existence as a modern federal state dates back to 1848 with the introduction of the first federal constitution taking into special consideration the cultural diversity of the country. The Consul General further stated that the Government is composed of seven Federal Councilors elected by the Federal Assembly. The members of the Government take their turn to act as President of the Swiss Confederation for one year. He is regarded as Primus inter pares, or first among equals, for the duration of his tenure. Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz is holding this office in 2009. The traditional Swiss neutrality had to be redefined after the end of the Cold War but remains a significant factor in Swiss foreign and security policy as a peace-related and humanitarian instrument. Neutrality is basically defined as non-participation in a war between other states. However, Swiss neutrality does not apply in the event of sanctions being imposed by the UN and does foresee the participation in peacekeeping missions. Swiss foreign policy pursues five main goals, namely the peaceful coexistence of nations, respect for human rights and promotion of democracy, safeguarding the interests of Swiss businesses abroad, alleviation of need and poverty in the world, and preservation of natural resources. The Swiss Consul General in his message stated that Pakistan is facing a difficult time right now. Many people have lost their lives in tragic incidents, others continue to suffer hardship because they had to flee their hometowns. He said that the Swiss Government, a long time bilateral donor, joined international efforts to provide assistance and participated in the Tokyo meeting of the Friends of democratic Pakistan. Furthermore, multilateral agencies and NGOs engaged in relief operations receive financial support from Switzerland. Martin Bienz also hoped that peace and normality will prevail soon. He pointed out that the long-standing bilateral relations between our two countries were initiated right after Pakistan's independence in 1947, when Switzerland immediately recognized the new state. The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of Swiss diplomatic presence in the city of Karachi. As a matter of fact, in 1949 Switzerland opened its first diplomatic mission in Karachi which was then called Legation and subsequently became the Embassy. When the Embassy moved to Islamabad in 1968, the Consulate General of Switzerland opened its doors in Karachi to assure a continuous official Swiss presence in this important economic center. During these six decades, our two countries have been working together in various domains. Martin Bienz said that in the 1970s and 1980s, Switzerland concluded several debt-rescheduling agreements with Pakistan. The signing of a bilateral agreement on technical and scientific cooperation led to the opening of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Islamabad in 1977. Over the years, he added, a remarkable number of programmes have been implemented throughout Pakistan and today's focal points are income generation (poverty alleviation) and good governance. The Consul General said that the economic ties between Switzerland and Pakistan have over the years reached a remarkable level. In 2008 the trade volume saw a new record high of close to 500 million Swiss Francs. Moreover, Switzerland ranks among the leading countries in terms of foreign direct investment in Pakistan. A number of Swiss multinational companies are successfully operating in Pakistan in sectors like food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals as well as banking and other service industries. Martin Bienz stated that a survey recently conducted by the Consulate General of Switzerland to assess the perception of the Swiss investors in the country revealed that they remain satisfied with their current business results and that they foresee further investments to consolidate their market position. He said that it is a fact that the global recession will have its repercussions on the bilateral economic performance in 2009. The Swiss Business Council in Pakistan which was formed a year ago, can make an important contribution in these challenging times to stimulate trade and investment between our two countries. The opening of new office premises in Karachi and the launch of a website are the latest achievements of this young and dynamic organization.

The Federal Minister said life and death is in the hands of Allah, but Allah has made doctors a source for the welfare of fellow human being. Dr Firdaus said that present is the government of people and PPP was voted to power to bring a change in the country. She said for the government, it is a moment to ponder whether or not a step has been taken to bring the required change and if the goal is not being achieved, then there must be some flaw in the policies implementation or in the roadmap. Referring to population explosion, Dr Firdaus described it as one reason responsible for terrorism and said it would be not surprising for terrorism to appear when there is poverty, illeteracy, unemployment, lack of better opportunities and supremacy of law being non-existent. "Instead of increasing the number of people, attention will have to be paid on quality population", she emphasised adding that if human resource will not be having a conducive environment along with education and held, then certainly there would be creation of Mulla Umer like people and such unwanted people who are not acceptable to the society.
